Against the run of play
A goal scored by the team that has been getting battered. Nothing about the previous twenty minutes suggested it was coming, and then it arrived anyway.
Honeymoon period
The early stretch after a new arrival where fans, media and even players give the benefit of the doubt, regardless of what the performances actually look like.
Whisper it quietly
A disclaimer used before a bold but plausible football prediction, signalling that the speaker knows the claim is ambitious but has enough conviction to say it anyway.
Medical
A full set of physical and fitness tests a player undergoes before a transfer is completed. Pass it, and the deal goes through. Fail it, and a "done deal" can collapse overnight. It's happened to some very expensive players.
Release clause
A fixed buyout price written into a player's contract. Any club willing to pay that exact number can sign the player, with no negotiation and no permission needed from the selling club.
