What trophies can an English soccer club win?
An English club can win up to eight trophies overall: four domestic, headed by the Premier League, and four European, headed by the Champions League.
Every bar has its trophies. The creamiest pint certificate. The best pub in the area plaque. The sexiest bartender award, twelve years running, thank you for asking.
They all sit on the same shelf. None of them are worth the same.
Leagues and cups are won completely differently
This is the thing to understand before any of the rest makes sense.
A league is won over thirty eight games across ten months. No final, no playoff. Finish top of the table and you're champion. It rewards consistency more than anything else, which is why it's the hardest one to win.
A cup is won by surviving six or seven knockout games. Lose once and you're out. A team can have a mediocre season and still win a cup by getting hot for six afternoons.
That's why a league title and a cup are treated so differently even when both are silver.
The four English trophies
The Premier League. The big one. Thirty eight games, one table, no playoffs. Hardest to win because you have to be good from August through May with no chance to reset.
The FA Cup. The oldest soccer cup in the world, running since 1871, and open to hundreds of clubs from every level. This is where a team from four divisions down knocks out a giant, which is the whole appeal.
The Carabao Cup. Also called the League Cup. Open to all 92 professional clubs. Big teams field second-string sides and claim not to care, right up until they reach the final.
The Community Shield. A single game at Wembley between the previous season's league champions and FA Cup winners, played in August. More of a curtain-raiser than a trophy, though nobody says so out loud while holding it.
The four European trophies
Qualification comes from finishing high enough in the Premier League or winning a domestic cup. The higher you finish, the better the competition you enter.
The Champions League sits at the top. Europe's leading clubs, and the trophy every big club actually wants.
The Europa League is the second tier. Still a serious competition, still a route back into the Champions League for the winner.
The Conference League is the third tier, aimed at clubs who wouldn't otherwise get European soccer at all.
The UEFA Super Cup is one game between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League.
One quirk worth knowing. Despite being called leagues, all three European competitions are actually a league phase followed by knockout rounds. Nothing about the naming in this sport is designed to help you.
